In the past, when he’s posted a blog, he tracks the responses. Jake knows that a “Thumb’s Up” is the equivalent of a “like”. He likes it even better when a reader adds a comment or two. His primary goal is to get more likes with his blog than Granddad generally receives from his. I’m okay with that, so you won’t hurt my feelings if you like Jake’s writing.
I am not giving Jake’s blog a “thumb’s up”. I am giving it a heart shape because Jake’s interest in sharing his story and his love for writing warms my heart.]
The following is the unedited story as shared by an eleven-year-old. Part of the story is beyond my comprehension. For example, the phrase AR-10 has no meaning for me. It may not register with you as well. I don’t think you’ll find that lack of understanding crucial to following his story – – –
Where should I start? I think I’m going to start off on Christmas day. So, if you are wondering why I have not written a blog in so long, it is because I have been hunting for big Louie, also known as a 13-point buck but we will get back to that later.
So, we were at home Christmas morning. For Christmas, I got a lower receiver and its parts for an AR 10 chambered in .308 and the barrel and gas tube. If you don’t know what that is, it’s gun parts. The thing is though, I shook the box that had the buffer and buffer spring, so I knew immediately what I had gotten.
So, a few days later we put together the lower receiver. If you didn’t know my birthday is on the 28th of December, so a couple of days later was my birthday. For my birthday, I got the whole upper receiver. I now had everything I needed for my gun. We put it all together yesterday and planned to shoot it today. The best thing on my birthday though was the food we had to eat. The year before I had decided to have Asian food that my family made and it was amazing. So I decided to have it again and it was even better than the year before.
The next afternoon we went hunting and went in a stand in the brush because it was so windy. We thought the deer would stay in the brush. So during the last 10 minutes of legal hunting light, we decided to check the feeder. So we go and there are 3 doe and then my amazing dad saw the outline of antlers. I knelt down to take aim for that buck, but I wasn’t steady in the kneeling because it was so cold. I went down in the prone and took aim, but by then big Louie was running off so I couldn’t get the shot.
A few tears were shed, but it was just allergies. Maybe? Fine – I was sad because I didn’t get the shot off. Then I realized that meant that Big Louie was still alive. So then of course we hunted the feeder the next day. It was a morning hunt so I was tired. It’s 32 degrees outside with wind blowing; it was freezing!
I was having a nice little nap and my dad said wake up Jake! BIG LOUIE was here, but it was too early to shoot. Legal hunting light is at 6:59 and it was only 6:50. We could barely make out antlers, so I get my rifle up and looked through the scope and saw Big Louie and just had to say “fi fie foe fum what beanstalk did you fall from?” so right at 6:59 my dad said when it turns broadside to us and you have a good shot take it so I waited for it to turn broadside and then my dad said when ever you are ready take a BOOM!
I pulled the trigger and my dad thought I had wounded Big Louie and that he was still alive. But like I said, “ I never miss”. We went around the house so he couldn’t run because he was cornered by a high fence on one side of the property. We walked about half a mile before we got on top of a hill that my dad thought it had run behind and died but we didn’t see the deer. I said again, “Dad remember I never miss”. So, then my dads eyes started to water and I said what’s the matter and I looked where my dad was looking . Then I saw big LOUIE piled up where I had shot him. Then I started to cry from joy. Actually, never mind it was just allergies.
I hope you liked it thank you for reading.
